Speed of Static
A conceptual expression for apparent stillness while something continues to change.
Where This Came From
I have not yet added the experience that led to this idea.
What I Noticed
An unchanged appearance does not tell us that everything beneath it is unchanged.
The Question
What may still be moving when the surface appears still?
What I Call It
I use Speed of Static as a conceptual expression.
Working Definition
The idea concerns apparent stillness and less visible change, such as pressure, information, deterioration, memory, expectation, or consequences.
Example
A stored document can look the same while its material deteriorates. The example concerns change over time; it does not define a speed for the concept.
What This Does Not Claim
Speed of Static is a conceptual expression. It does not define measurable variables or a physical speed.
Limitations
Different kinds of change cannot be treated as one quantity without a defined model.
What I Still Do Not Know
Which comparisons help explain an experience, and which make different things seem alike?
